THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release July 17, 1995

STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT

I applaud the Senators who this evening voted to continue debate on regulatory reform. Because it involves issues that affect each and every American, this bill is one of the most important to come before Congress this year.

Although debate last week led to some progress on the bill, significant problems remain. It still provides special loopholes for special interests. It still costs too much. It creates too much bureaucracy and gives lawyers too many opportunities to file frivolous lawsuits.

And it would compromise efforts to protect us from contaminated meat, to provide safe water and air, and to protect American workers. For these reasons, I would recommend that the President veto it in its current form.
