THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release July 13, 1995

STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE ON REGULATORY REFORM

The Senate is considering a bill that could continue to allow meat contaminated by e. coli to be sold, contaminated drinking water to flow and industrial accidents to occur. It is a bad bill and it should be opposed if it cannot be changed.

Because of the debate this week, we have made some progress on the bill. But significant problems remain. It still provides special loopholes for special interests. It still costs too much, creates too much bureaucracy and gives too many lawyers too many ways to file too many lawsuits. And it stops 25 years of bipartisan progress improving public health, worker safety and the natural environment.

Therefore, I am deeply disturbed that some Senators may want to shut off discussion of this bill. This bill is one of the most important to come before Congress this year. It affects most of the public safeguards provided by nearly every federal agency, in ways we're just beginning to understand. It deserves careful attention.
