        PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES JOYCE A. SAVOCCHIO TO THE BOARD 
                OF TRUSTEES OF THE CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS 
                         FELLOWSHIP FOUNDATION

     The President today announced his intent to appoint Joyce A.

Savocchio to the Board of Trustees of the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation.

Joyce A. Savocchio of Pennsylvania is currently the Mayor of Erie, Pennsylvania. She has served on the Erie City Council for nine years and was an educational administrator. Ms. Savocchio has also been the President of the Erie Education Association. She won the Italian-American Woman of the Year Award in 1987, the Sales and Marketing Career Award and the Jewish National Fund "Tree of Life" Award in 1995. She received her B.A. from Mercyhurst College, her M.Ed. from the University of Pittsburgh and a Secondary School Administration degree from Edinboro University, which named her its Outstanding Alumna in 1993.

The Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation was created to encourage and support research, study, and labor designed to produce new discoveries in all fields of endeavor for the benefit of mankind. The Board awards fellowships to outstanding individuals, known as Columbus Scholars, to encourage such new discoveries. The Board submits an annual report to the President and Congress on its activities.
