THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release May 25, 1995

STATEMENT BY THE WHITE HOUSE CHIEF OF STAFF ON BUDGET

As the President has repeatedly stated, we must balance the budget, but there is a right way and a wrong way. The Senate budget is a textbook example of the wrong way. Their budget requires the largest Medicare cut in history, slashes education, and even raises taxes on 12 million working families in order to pay for huge tax cuts that go largely to the wealthy. We must bring the budget into balance, but we must do so in a way that ensures fair health care reform for our seniors, that is equitable to working families, and that does not cripple our efforts to close the education deficit in our country.
