For Immediate Release May 23, 1995
Statement by The Press Secretary on
Visit by Ulster Unionist Party Delegation

A delegation from the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) of Northern Ireland visited the White House May 22 and met Anthony Lake, Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, and Nancy Soderberg, Deputy Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs. The UUP delegation was led by William Ross, M.P., who was accompanied by Roy Beggs, M.P., Vice Chairman Dennis Rogan and Party Secretary Jeffrey Donaldson. The UUP delegation is in Washington to participate in the White House Conference for Trade and Investment in Ireland, which will be held May 24-26.

The delegation's discussion with Mr. Lake and Ms. Soderberg focused on the conference's aim of promoting increased U.S. trade and investment in Northern Ireland as a means of underpining the peace. The UUP leaders outlined their views of the peace process in Northern Ireland. Mr. Lake emphasized that the U.S. would continue to play a constructive role in encouraging progress toward a democratic settlement which enjoys the consent of both of Northern Ireland's communities.
