STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

President Clinton today met with Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe for an Official Working Visit. The President and President Mugabe welcomed the growing cooperation between the two countries and discussed ideas to enhance increased trade and investment opportunities. The visit is President Mugabe's fourth to the United States.

President Clinton applauded President Mugabe's leadership in launching a comprehensive economic structural adjustment program to bring greater prosperity to his people. They reaffirmed their commitment to work together to encourage efforts to attract foreign investment.

The President expressed appreciation for Zimbabwe's constructive role in promoting democracy, international peacekeeping and regional conflict resolution, especially in Angola. The two leaders pledged continued cooperation to perserve peace in the region.
