THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release April 14, 1995
PRESIDENT NAMES JOSEPH C. SWIFT TO
                       THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON
PERSONAL MOTOR VEHICLE GREENHOUSE GAS REDUCTIONS

The President today announced his intention to appoint Joseph C. Swift of Pennsylvania, as a Member of the Advisory Committee on Personal Motor Vehicle Greenhouse Reductions.

Mr. Swift is Vice President of Government Affairs and Community Relations for the Sun Company, Inc. where he is responsible for Sun Oil Company's federal, state and local government affairs and community relations. He previously served as President of Sun Pipe Line Company, a subsidiary of the company responsible for Sun's crude oil and product pipelines and marine terminals.

The Advisory Committee on Personal Motor Vehicle Greenhouse Gas Reductions is an unprecedented effort to bring together auto industry representatives, environmentalists, state and local officials, and other interested parties to develop recommendations for cutting greenhouse gas emissions from cars and light trucks well into the next century.

In October 1993, the President issued the Climate Change Action Plan which committed the U.S. to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by the year 2000, and called for a process to address greenhouse gas emissions in the post-2000 period. Because many experts expect the transportation sector to be the fastest growing source of greenhouse gas emissions in the future, the Committee is charged with seeking policies that, if adopted, would cost-effectively return emissions from personal motor vehicles to their 1990 level by the years 2005, 2015, and 2025.
