STATEMENT OF THE PRESS SECRETARY

State Visit by President Kim of the Republic of Korea

President Clinton has invited South Korean President Kim Young Sam to the United States for a State Visit on July 25-28. President Kim has accepted the invitation.

The visit will provide an opportunity for the two Presidents to expand the already close ties between the United States and the Republic of Korea, and to continue bilateral consultations on non-proliferation and security issues relating to the Korean Peninsula.

President Kim will also attend the official dedication of the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The memorial commemorates the sacrifices of heroic men and women of the United States who served in Korea. They, along with the courageous soldiers of the Republic of Korea and many other nations under the United Nations flag, repelled aggression and restored peace on the Korean Peninsula. The memorial will be dedicated on the forty-second anniversary of the signing of the armistice agreement that ended the Korean conflict.
