STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

President Clinton's meeting with King Hussein of Jordan

In his meeting with King Hussein, the President reaffirmed his commitment to support Jordan as it builds upon the historic treaty with Israel to establish a warm and lasting peace. The President expressed his determination to work with Congress to secure full appropriations in the FY 1995 Department of Defense supplemental for Jordan debt forgiveness, emphasizing that the United States must demonstrate that it stands by those who take risks for peace. The President and King Hussein also discussed developments in the Middle East peace process, particularly the progress made as a result of Secretary Christopher's recent visit to the region toward a comprehensive and lasting settlement.
