             PRESIDENT NAMES WALTER PARKER AS REPRESENTATIVE 
                    TO THE ARCTIC RESEARCH COMMISSION

The President today announced his intention to appoint Walter Parker of Alaska, as the Academic Representative to the Arctic Research Commission.

Mr. Parker is currently President of Parker Associates, an Alaskan firm specializing in transportation and telecommunications planning and applications. He was Chair of the Alaska Oil Spill Commission which investigated the wreck of the Exxon Valdez and Co-Chair of the Joint Federal/State Land Use Planning Commission for Alaska. He is a former Professor of regional and urban planning, public administration and political science at the University of Alaska. He is Chair of the Alaska Hazardous Substance Spill Technology Review Council and immediate past Chair of the Alaska Humanities Forum State Committee.

The Arctic Research Commission develops and recommends integrated national Arctic research policy; facilitates cooperation between the Federal, State and local governments with respect to Arctic research; and reviews Federal Arctic research programs and recommends improvements.
