STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

National Security Adviser Anthony Lake announced the appointment of William C. Danvers as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Legislative Affairs at the National Security Council effective immediately.

Mr. Danvers has been serving as Acting Senior Director for Legislative Affairs at the National Security Council since June 1994. Prior to coming to the NSC, Mr. Danvers was a Senior Advisor to Strobe Talbott, then Ambassador- at-Large for the New Independent States. He also worked in the House of Representatives for eight years as a legislative assistant for foreign affairs and staff director for the House Banking Subcommittee for International Finance, Trade and Monetary Policy. He also served as a legislative assistant for economic issues for Senator Joe Lieberman.

Mr. Danvers received his M.A. from George Washington University in international relations, specializing in European and Soviet area studies. He was awarded a B.A. with high honors from the Honors College at Michigan State University with a concentration in Russian studies. Married to Gwendolyn Saari Danvers, they and their two children, Alexander and Camille, live in Arlington, Virginia.
