            PRESIDENT NAMES LINDA ALVARADO TO THE PRESIDENT'S 
            ADVISORY COMMISSION ON EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE FOR 
                           HISPANIC AMERICANS

     The President today announced his intention to appoint Linda

Alvarado to the President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans.

Linda Alvarado of Colorado is President of Alvarado Construction, Inc., a commercial general contracting firm based in Denver, Colorado. Ms. Alvarado is also Corporate Director of Pitney Bowes, Inc., Norwest Colorado Banks, Inc., Cyprus Amax Minerals Company and Lennox International. She is a member of the Greater Denver Chamber of Commerce, the National Network of Hispanic Women and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Alvarado is a nationally recognized speaker and advocate for Hispanic business issues and has given keynote presentations for corporations, institutions of higher learning, national conferences and public schools. Most recently, she was the recipient of the Sara Lee Corporation Frontrunner Award for exemplary achievement and leadership in business and the community. Previously, Ms. Alvarado was named "One of the 100 Most Influential Hispanics in America" by the Denver Business Journal, and was the 1994 Denver Hispanic Chamber of Commerce National Businesswoman of the Year.

The President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans has been established in the Department of Education to advise the President and the Secretary of Education on the progress of Hispanic Americans toward the achievement of the National Education Goals and other standards of educational accomplishment. The Commission develops, monitors, and coordinates federal efforts to promote high quality education for Hispanic Americans. The Commission also examines ways to increase state, private sector, and community involvement in improving education.
