                    STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY
                ON VISIT OF PRESIDENT RAWLINGS OF GHANA

President Clinton today hosted a working luncheon during the Official Working Visit of Ghanaian President Jerry John Rawlings. Over lunch, the President and President Rawlings welcomed the growing cooperation between the two countries and discussed ideas to enhance regional stability in West Africa.

In addition, the President expressed his appreciation for Ghana's leading role in international peacekeeping especially in Liberia. He pledged continued U.S. support for Ghana's efforts in regional conflict resolution. The two leaders agreed that a regional conference should be held soon to solidify the gains made in the Accra Accord regarding Liberia.

The two Presidents also discussed their continued interest in trade and investment opportunities in Ghana. President Clinton applauded Ghana's consistent five percent annual economic growth for the past decade. They reaffirmed their commitment to work together to encourage efforts to attract foreign investment.
