     PRESIDENT NOMINATES JOSUE (JOE) ROBLES, JR. TO SERVE AS MEMBER
         OF THE DEFENSE BASE CLOSURE AND REALIGNMENT COMMISSION 

The President announced today his nomination of Josue (Joe) Robles, Jr., of Texas to serve on the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission.

Joe Robles is senior vice president, Chief Financial Officer/Corporate Controller for USAA Financial Services. He directs USAA's activities in the areas of Payroll and Compensation Accounting, Accounting Policy, Corporate Financial Analysis, Internal Audit and Taxes.

General Robles was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico on January 24, 1946. He joined the U.S. Army in 1966 and received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting from Dent State University in 1972. His military education includes Field Artillery Basic and Advanced Courses, U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Spanish General Staff College, and U.S. Naval War College.

Robles served in a variety of important command and staff positions, culminating in his assignment as Commanding General of 1st Infantry Division (Mech) and Fort Riley, Fort Riley, Kansas. His mid-level assignments included work with the Resource Management Department of the U.S. Army Institute of Administration at Fort Benjamin in Harrison, Indiana. Robles' recent assignments included Chief of the Programming and Budget Office at the Headquarters, U.S. Army at the Pentagon, and Division Artillery commander of the 1st Infantry Division (Mech), Fort Riley, Kansas.

General Robles is married to the former Patricia Ann Gavin of East Greenwich, RI and has three sons, Joseph (deceased), Andrew and Christopher, and a daughter, Melissa.

The Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission is responsible for providing a fair process that will result in timely closure or realignment of U.S. military institutions that are no longer a high priority or need to be changed. Specifically, it reviews the recommendations of the Secretary of Defense and transmits a report of its findings and conclusions to the President.
