STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

The President announced today that he has established, Presidential Emergency Board No. 226, to investigate and make recommendations for settlement of the current dispute between Metro North Commuter Railroad and certain of its employees represented by several labor organizations including the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (including the American Train Dispatchers Division), Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen, International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers, International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Shipbuilders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Sheet Metal Workers International Union, Transport Workers Union Of America, Transportation Communications International Union (ARASA Division) and the United Transportation Union.

The President, by Executive Order, established the Emergency Board at the request of Metro North Commuter Railroad.

The President appointed Herbert L. Marx, Jr., New York, NY to be Chairman of the Board and Josef P. Sirefman, Glen Head, NY and Lois A. Rappaport, New York, NY as members.

The Emergency Board will report its findings and recommendations for settlement to the President in thirty (30) days.
