STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY ON VISIT BY PRESIDENT OF BRAZIL

President Clinton has invited Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso to the United States for a State Visit beginning April 20. President Cardoso has accepted the invitation.

The visit will provide an opportunity for the two Presidents to expand the already close ties between the United States and Brazil, the two largest democracies and the two largest economies in the Western Hemisphere.

President Cardoso's visit will also provide a forum for the two Presidents to continue the dialogue begun at the Summit of the Americas in Miami on strengthening democracy in the hemisphere, encouraging trade and investment and promoting sustainable development.
