             PRESIDENT NAMES U. S. MARSHAL 
         FOR THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK

President Clinton today announced his intention to nominate Martin James Burke of New York to be the U. S. Marshal for the Southern District of New York.

Mr. Burke received a B. S. Degree in Criminal Justice from Mercer College, Dobbs Ferry, New York, and served in the U. S. Navy Reserves from 1960 to 1968.

Since 1966, Mr. Burke has been employed with the New York State Police in Albany. He currently holds the rank of Major and is in charge of the Protective Services Unit. He is responsible for the safety and security of the Governor and his family, the Lieutenant Governor, and visiting dignitaries. Mr. Burke was born in Bronx, New York, is married and has three children.
