PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES FOUR TO NUTRITION MONITORING ADVISORY COUNCIL

The President today announced his intention to nominate Cutberto Garza, Shiriki K. Kumanyika, Kailash Mathur, and Suzanne P. Murphy to the National Nutrition Monitoring Advisory Council.

Dr. Cutberto Garza is Director of the Division of Nutritional Sciences at Cornell University, and has been both a pediatrician and researcher in the field of pediatric nutrition. His expertise has been utilized by the World Health Organization, the National Cancer Institute, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He received a B.S. and M.D. from Baylor University and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr. Shiriki K. Kumanyika is an Associate Director for Epidemiology at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. She is an expert in nutritional epidemiology. Dr. Kumanyika has served on the council since 1991 and was elected chair in 1993.

Dr. Kailash Mathur is a retired professor of natural sciences and dairy science and has had extensive experience in diary science and nutrition. Dr. Mathur is a doctor of veterinary medicine along with holding a Ph.D. in the nutritional sciences and a M.S. in dairy science.

Dr. Suzanne Murphy is a research nutritionist, a registered dietician, and has conducted research regarding the factors affecting nutritional adequacy in the United States and the effect of living arrangements on dietary intakes.

The purpose of the Nutritional Monitoring Advisory Council is to provide scientific and technical advice on the development and implementation of a ten-year comprehensive plan for national nutrition monitoring. The Council also serves in an advisory capacity to the Secretaries of the Departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture regarding the enhancement of the comprehensive plan.
