THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release November 23, 1994

STATEMENT BY THE PRESIDENT

I commend the decision of the Postmaster General to continue the traditional Holiday Stamp in 1995.

For twenty-eight years, Americans of all faiths and stations in life have purchased this commemorative Christmas stamp.

The Postal Service has historically embraced the cultural and religious diversity of America -- honoring with its stamps religious symbols and religious figures including Francis of Assisi, Martin Luther, Brigham Young, Mahatma Gandhi, the Torah, Truro Synagogue, the Mormon Temple, and General George Washington kneeling in prayer at Valley Forge, among others.

In this spirit, I am pleased with the Postmaster General's decision to allow this holiday tradition to continue.
