EXCERPTS FROM PRESIDENT CLINTON'S REMARKS TO JORDANIAN PARLIAMENT

America refuses to accept that our civilizations must collide.

We respect Islam as one of the great religions in this cradle of civilization.

On one side stands the forces of terror and extremism, who cloak themselves in the rhetoric of religion and nationalism. These forces of reaction feed on disillusionment, poverty and despair. They stoke the fires of violence and seek to destroy the progress of peace.

To them I say -- you will not succeed. You are the past, not the future. And I say to the people of Jordan and all those throughout the Arab world who are working for peace: no step is more difficult to take than the one before you and none, more important.
