          PRESIDENT NAMES CHARLES T. MANATT AS A MEMBER OF THE 
             BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR THE COMSAT CORPORATION

President Clinton today announced his intention to nominate Charles T. Manatt to the Board of Directors for the COMSAT Corporation.

Mr. Manatt is Chairman, Senior Partner and founding member of the law firm of Manatt, Phelps and Phillips. He served as chairman of the California Democratic Party from 1971 - 1977, Finance Chairman of the National Democratic Party from 1978-1981 and was Chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1981 - 1985. Mr. Manatt also serves as a member of the Los Angeles County Boy Scout Council and as Chairman of the International Foundation for Electoral System.

COMSAT, known as the Communications Satellite Corporation prior to 1993, is a private, shareholder owned, publicly traded corporation which was established in 1962 by an act of Congress to facilitate understanding and world peace through an improved global communications network. COMSAT is governed by a 15-member board, 12 of whom are elected annually by the shareholders and three of whom are appointed by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate.
