         PRESIDENT NAMES KENNETH L. SALAZAR AS CHAIR OF THE RIO 
                       GRANDE COMPACT COMMISSION

     President Clinton today announced his intention to appoint Kenneth

L. Salazar as Chair of the Rio Grande Compact Commission.

Mr. Salazar is presently a shareholder and director in the Denver law firm of Parcel, Mauro, Hultin & Spaanstra, P.C. Mr. Salazar served as Executive Director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources from 1990 - 1994. Prior to that he served as chief legal counsel for Colorado Governor Roy Romer. He has extensive experience in environmental, natural resources and public lands law and has served on the Colorado Water Conservation Board, the Mineral Impact Fund Advisory Committee and the State Board of Equalization.

The purpose of the Commission is to administer the Compact among the States of Colorado, New Mexico and Texas with respect to the equitable apportionment and use of the waters of the Rio Grande.
