              PRESIDENT NAMES RHEA L. GRAHAM  DIRECTOR
                    OF THE U.S. BUREAU OF MINES

      The President today announced his intention to nominate Rhea

L. Graham to be Director of the U.S. Bureau of Mines, Department of the Interior.

Ms. Graham is a geologist with extensive experience in the mining and minerals industry. She is a senior scientist with Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), of Albuquerque, N.M. She has also served as Administrator of the State of New Mexico's Mining, and Minerals Division of the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department. She also worked several years as a senior engineering geologist with the environmental consulting firm of Deuel & Associates, Inc. of Albuquerque, N.M.

Ms. Graham graduated from Bryn Mawr College with a B.A. in 1974 and Oregon State University with an M.A. in 1977. She is married, has two children and resides in Albuquerque, N.M. She was born in Terre Haute, Indiana.
