THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release August 23, 1994

STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

At the request of Governor Lawton Chiles, the Administration is sending a delegation of senior officials to south Florida tomorrow to consult with the community on the current outflow Cuban of migrants. The delegation includes officials from the White House, the Department of State, the National Security Council staff and the Department of Defense. These meetings continue our close consultations with elected State and local officials and community, civic and political groups in Florida.

As the President said when he announced these actions last week, the United States will do everything within its power to ensure that Cuban lives are saved, that migrants picked up at sea are given safe haven outside the US, but that they will not be admitted to the U.S.
