            PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES JAMES W. SWIHART, JR. 
                      AS AMBASSADOR TO LITHUANIA

President Clinton today announced his intention to nominate James W. Swihart,Jr. of Virginia, a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service as Ambassador to the Republic of Lithuania.

Mr. Swihart has been serving as Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Vienna since August 1991. From 1989 until 1991 he was the Director of the Office of Eastern European and Yugoslav Affairs in the Department of State, which included responsibility for relations with the Baltic States.

Mr. Swihart's prior service includes assignments in Yugoslavia, Germany, and Belize, as well as numerous positions in the European Bureau of the State Department. He is a recipient of the Department's Superior Honor Award and a graduate of the Senior Seminar. Swihart speaks German, Serbo-Croatian and Spanish. He is married and has a son and a daughter.
