Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release July 5, 1994

STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

President Clinton met today with former Mississippi Governor Ray Mabus, who will be departing shortly to Riyadh to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. President Clinton emphasized that the appointment of Ambassador-designate Mabus was an indication of the importance he attaches to the close and strong relations between the United States and Saudi Arabia.

They discussed the crisis in Yemen, particularly the critical situation in Aden. The President reiterated the U.S. call on Sanaa for an immediate cease-fire and implementation of UNSC Resolutions 924 and 931, including the urgent requirements for humanitarian relief for the city of Aden and the resumption of negotiations to settle outstanding political differences.
