Statement by the Press Secretary

President Clinton and Vice President Gore had a very cordial meeting with Dr. Joao Havelange, President of the Federation International de Football Association (FIFA) this morning. The meeting lasted 15 minutes.

The President thanked Dr. Havelange for his role in bringing the World Cup to the United States and conveyed enthusiastic support for the 1994 tournament.

Dr. Havelange and Alan Rothenberg, Chairman and CEO of World Cup USA 1994, thanked President Clinton for his support of international soccer and this year's tournament. They also had the opportunity to discuss the building enthusiasm within the United States for the Games.

The President said he was looking forward to participating in the Opening Ceremonies in Chicago on June 17th.

This year's tournament will begin in Chicago on June 17th and be held in nine venues throughout the United States ending with the Closing Ceremonies in Los Angeles on July 17th.
