        PRESIDENT NAMES SANDRA STUART AS ASSISTANT SECRETARY 
                 OF DEFENSE FOR LEGISLATIVE AFFAIRS

President Clinton today announced his intention to nominate Sandra Stuart of North Carolina to become the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Legislative Affairs.

Since July of last year, she has served as the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Legislative Affairs, a position which has now been reallocated as an Assistant Secretary with Senate confirmation.

Prior to joining the Department of Defense, she served as Congressman Vic Fazio's Chief of Staff, as his Administrative Assistant since 1987, and as Associate Staff on the House Appropriations Committee. From 1983 to 1987, she served as Associate Staff on the House Budget Committee for Congressman Fazio. Previously, she was the Chief Legislative Assistant to Rep. Robert Matsui. Ms. Stuart received a B.A. from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, and attended the Monterey College of Law.

As Assistant Secretary of Legislative Affairs for the Department of Defense, Stuart is the senior officer in the agency responsible for representing the Department to the Congress.
