          PRESIDENT ANNOUNCES INTENT TO NOMINATE BRADY ANDERSON 
            AS AMBASSADOR TO THE UNITED REPUBLIC OF TANZANIA

The President today announced his intention to nominate Brady Anderson of Arkansas as Ambassador to the United Republic of Tanzania.

Anderson, who is currently on leave of absence from the Summer Institute of Linguistics, was the Institute's Director in Tanzania from 1988-1992 and Assistant Director in Ethiopia from 1992-1993. While in Tanzania he conducted sociolinguistic research in the local languages. He speaks Swahili, the national language of Tanzania. In 1978-1980, Anderson was liaison for the Arkansas Department of Health and Human Services for then-Governor Bill Clinton.

Brady Anderson was born in Memphis, Tennessse, on July 27, 1945, and was raised in Helena, Arkansas. He graduated from Rhodes College in 1967 and served in the U. S. Navy 1967-1971, receiving the Navy Commendation and Vietnam Service Medals. He graduated from the University of Arkansas Law School in 1973. He is married to Betty Wray Anderson of Shreveport, Louisiana, and they have two daughters, Helen, a pre- med student in Houston, and Heath, a high school senior in Little Rock.

          PRESIDENT ANNOUNCES INTENT TO NOMINATE DOROTHY MYERS 
             SAMPAS AS AMBASSADOR TO THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF 
                               MAURITANIA

The President today announced his intention to nominate Dorothy Myers Sampas, of Maryland, a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Minister-Counselor, as Ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania.

Sampas has served for 26 years as a Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State. Currently, she is Minister-Counselor for Administrative Affairs of the United Nations in New York City. She served as Counselor and Minister-Counselor for Administrative Affairs at the American Embassy in Beijing from 1987-1990.

Born on August 24, 1933 in Washington, D.C., Sampas went on to earn an A.B. degree from the University of Michigan and a Ph. D. from Georgetown University. She has also attended the Ecole des Sciences Politiques of the University de Paris, the National War College and the Defense Resources Management Institution of the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, California.

Sampas speaks French and German. She is married to James G. Sampas, a retired Foreign Service Officer. They have two sons, George and Lawrence.
