For Immediate Release March 19, 1994

STATEMENT BY THE DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS

State Visit by the Emperor and Empress of Japan

The President and Mrs. Clinton are pleased that the Emperor and Empress of Japan have accepted their invitation to visit the United States beginning June 10, 1994.

In Washington, the Emperor and Empress will be the state guests of the United States Government. They will be welcomed to the White House by President and Mrs. Clinton and will be their honored guests at a State Dinner. During their two-week stay, they will also have the opportunity to visit a number of other American cities and regions of the United States.

This will be the first visit to the United States by a Japanese Emperor and Empress since 1975. We look forward to this visit as an opportunity to reaffirm the strength of the ties between our two counties and of the close relationship that exists between the people of Japan and the people of the United States.
