FACT SHEET

UKRAINE: SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AGREEMENT

The agreement signed today establishes a formal framework for science and technology (S&T) cooperation between the United States and Ukraine. In force for an initial period of five years, the agreement provides for cooperation in all fields of science and technology and includes protection for intellectual property potentially resulting from joint research projects.

Ukraine is rich in scientific and technological resources with many world-class researchers and institutions. In some fields, U.S. and Ukrainian scientists have been cooperating for a number of years. For example, joint work in fusion energy, civilian nuclear energy, and mineral sciences has continued under agreements with the former Soviet Union.

The new agreement will provide a framework for possible expansion of bilateral S&T activities in such fields as agriculture, environment, health, transportation, fossil energy, electricity production, and meteorology. It allows for specific topics of cooperation and administrative arrangements to be detailed in memoranda of cooperation concluded directly between the cooperating government agencies.
