PRESIDENT TO NAME TORANO TO COMMISSION ON PUBLIC DIPLOMACY
President Clinton announced today that he intends to nominate Miami businesswoman Maria Elena Torano to be a member of the U.S. Advisory Commission on Public Diplomacy, which oversees the operations of the Ynited States Information Agency.
Torano is the President and CEO of META, a multi-disciplinary firm providing technical services and program support to federal, state, and local government agencies and to private organization, and of METEC, an asset management company. In 1979 and 1980, she was President of the National Association of Spanish Broadcasters, and from 1977-79 she sered in the Carter Administration as Associate Director of Public Affairs at the U.S. Community Services Administraton.
Over the course of her career, Tonano has also been Director of Latin American Affairs at the University of Miami, a program manger for Eastern Airlines, a caseworker for the Florida Department of Public Welfare, and a public school teacher. A native of Cuba, she received her education at Sacred Heart College and the University of Havanna, and at continuing education programs in marketing, communications and public affairs.
