THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release January 21, 1994

STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

The President telephoned President Guntis Ulmanis of the Republic of Latvia yesterday. The conversation focussed on President Clinton's recent meetings in Moscow with President Yeltsin and other Russian officials, during which the issue of the withdrawal of Russian troops from Latvia and Estonia was discussed.

President Clinton underscored for President Ulmanis his continued strong support for the completion of Russia's troop withdrawal from Latvia in 1994. The two Presidents discussed the status of Russian-Latvian talks toward agreement on Russian withdrawal, and expressed hope that the few outstanding issues remaining would be resolved in order to permit that agreement to be concluded as soon as possible.

The conversation lasted about 20 minutes.
