President Clinton today announced two additional measures to respond to
the immediate needs of the victims of the Southern California earthquake:
The State of California was advanced $100 million from the
Presidential Disaster Fund for Public Assistance, for all
repairs to local, city, and state infrastructure and facilities;
The President announced a five-day extension of 100% direct
Federal assistance costs for emergency work in the effected
area. The assistance includes all Federal efforts in providing
shelters, temporary housing, food, water, public health and
safety, and other essential emergency services that are being
provided by the Federal government. On January 17, the
President authorized 100% Federal funding for emergency work for
the first 72 hours of the disaster. This five-day extension
begins at 5:00 pm (EST) January 20, 1994.
These steps are in addition to the aid the President announced
yesterday of $45 million in Department of Transportation funds and $95
million in Small Business Administration funds, which will support $239
million in loans.
