Statement by the Press Secretary

The President made two phone calls this afternoon to foreign leaders. In a conversation with Chancellor Helmut Kohl of Germany, the two leaders discussed impressions from the President's recent visit to Western and Central Europe, Ukraine, Russia and Belarus, and their common support for new intiatives at the NATO Summit, including the Partnership for Peace. The conversation lasted about 20 minutes.

The President also spoke with King Fahd of Saudi Arabia. The two leaders discussed President Clinton's meeting on January 16 in Geneva with President Asad of Syria. They exchanged views on the Middle East peace process and other issues. The conversation lasted about 15 minutes.
