STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

The President made phone calls to French President Francois Mitterrand and French Prime Minister Edouard Balladur from aboard Air Force One today to press forward on the Uruguay Round trade negotiations.

The President and the French leaders agreed that this week's talks produced progress. They also identified outstanding differences between the U.S. and the European Union and agreed that both sides would work hard in the coming days to resolve the remaining issues.
