Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release October 30, 1993
             PRESIDENT INVITES PRESIDENT FIDEL RAMOS
OF THE PHILIPPINES FOR OFFICIAL VISIT

The President has invited President Fidel V. Ramos of the Republic of the Philippines for an official visit to the White House on November 22. This invitation demonstrates the importance the President attaches to the historically close relationship between our two countries. As we enter a new era in U.S.-Philippine relations, the visit of President Ramos offers an opportunity to revitalize our friendship on a basis of mutual economic and security interests and a shared commitment to democracy.

President Ramos' first official visit to Washington will follow his participation in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Leaders' meeting in Seattle November 19-20.

Among the issues the two leaders will discuss in Washington will be efforts to increase bilateral trade and investment, as economic links become the new foundation of the relationship. The meeting will also provide an opportunity for the Presidents to reaffirm their commitment to our Mutual Defense Treaty, which is a pillar of regional security and stability.
