STATEMENT OF THE VICE PRESIDENT

I am pleased with Attorney General Reno's implementation of our National Performance Review recommendation to consolidate certain basic functions of the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Attorney General Reno and I have worked together to devise a strategy for coordinating the work of these agencies in the most effective and sensible way. The plan announced today is a major step in that direction, and will result in both savings for the taxpayers and enhanced performance of the law enforcement mission.
