STATEMENT OF THE VICE PRESIDENT

President Clinton has made an outstanding choice in selecting Dr. David Satcher to be Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. As the President of MeHarry Medical College, Dr. Satcher has done an extraordinary job, leading the way to better public health services and increased education of disease prevention. All of us in Tennessee are grateful for his service and leadership, and admire and respect him greatly.

Throughout his career, Dr. Satcher has made a determined effort to help others, and to strengthen and improve health care in our country, particularly for minorities. His extensive experience, intelligence, management skills, and commitment to improve public health care combine to make him an excellent appointment. Dr. Satcher is renowned for his leadership in preventive medicine and his vision for providing adequate community health care.

I strongly support Dr. Satcher's appointment to be Director for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. His record in medicine and public health is unparalleled, and I know he will do an outstanding job.
