KREBS, MOODY NAMED TO ENERGY POSTS

(Washington, DC) President Clinton announced today that he intends to nominate Martha Krebs and Corlis Moody to senior positions at the Department of Energy. Krebs will be Director of the Office of Energy Research, and Moody will be the Director of the Office of Minority Economic Impact.

"It gives me great pleasure to announce these nominations today," said the President. "Martha Krebs has demonstrated tremendous leadership capacity as an administrator of one of our country's most important research facilities and a senior Congressional aide. As for Corlis Moody, Secretary O'Leary knows better than anyone the high quality of work that she has done in the past and is capable of doing at the Department of Energy. I welcome both of their service."

Martha Krebs has been an Associate Laboratory Director at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory in California since 1983, with responsibility most recently for planning and development. Before coming to the lab, she was Staff Director of the House Subcommittee on Energy Development and Applications for three years, after working for other Congressional committees and as a Science and Technology Analyst at the Library of Congress. She holds an A.B. and Ph.D. in Physics from the Catholic University of America.

Corlis Moody is the Director of Workforce Effectiveness and Diversity at the Northern States Power Co. in Minneapolis, where she has worked since 1989 in a series of increasingly responsible positions. She had previously been a consultant with Smith, Moody, and Smith, a Des Moines firm specializing in Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action plan development and training. Before that, Moody was an Outreach Educator for Planned Parenthood of San Joaquin Valley. She holds a B.A. from Southern University, and a Master of Public Administration, Personnel from Drake University in Des Moines.

            OFFICIALS NAMED FOR MARITIME COMMISSION, 
       LABOR RELATIONS AUTHORITY, AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT BANK

(Washington, DC) The President named senior officials for three government agencies today, expressing his intention to nominate Joseph Swerzewski to be General Councel of the Federal Labor Relations Authority, and Alice Dear to be Executive Director of the African Development Bank, and to renominate William Hathaway as a Member and Chair of the Federal Maritime Commission.

Swerzewski has been with the Federal Labor Relations Authority, the federal sector equivalent of the National Labor Relations Board, since 1979, serving most recently as Counsel for Special Outreach. He began his career with the FLRA as Supervisory Attorney for the Los Angeles Region, and then as the Regional Attorney for the Denver Region before coming to Washington in 1990. He had previously served for four years as in the Air Force Judge Advocate Corps, and was an assistant to the Suffolk County, New York County Executive. Swerzewski holds a B.A. from the College of the Holy Cross and a J.D. from Fordham University.

Alice M. Dear is an international finance and marketing specialist who has travelled extensively in Africa and the Middle East for more than 20 years. She is currently President of her own consulting firm, A.M. Dear & Associates, Inc. Before forming that firm in 1989, she was a Vice President and Marketing Officer of the Irving Trust Company, with responsibility for banking services and products in Africa and the Middle East. From 1969-77 she was a Flight Service Speicalist for Pan American World Airways. Dear holds a B.A. from Howard University and an M.B.A. from Pace University.

William Hathaway, a former Congressman and Senator from Maine, has been a member of the Federal Maritime Commission since 1990. He served in the House of Representatives from 1965-72, and was a member of the Appropriations, Education and Labor, and Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committees until his election to the Senate, where he served from 1973-78. Prior to his election to Congress, Hathaway had been a Hearing Examiner with the Maine Liquor Commission, Assistant Adroscoggin County Attorney, and a lawyer in private practice. From 1979-90, he was of Counsel to the firm of Patton, Boggs, and Blow, and was an Adjunct Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center and the University of Maine Law School. A World War II veteran, Hathaway holds B.A. and J.D. degrees from Harvard University.
